Denture Relines Explained: Restoring a Tight, Comfortable Fit

If your denture is in good condition but has started to slip, you likely don't need a new set — you need a reline. A reline is one of the most cost-effective services in denture care: it reshapes the fitting surface of your existing denture to match your current gums, rebuilding the suction seal and restoring comfort for a fraction of the cost of replacement.

Why relines are needed

After tooth loss, the underlying jawbone and gums slowly shrink throughout your life. A denture moulded to your gums a few years ago no longer matches today's contour, so the suction breaks and the denture loosens. A reline closes that gap between the denture base and your current gum shape.

Hard relines

A hard reline uses the same durable acrylic as the denture base. Chris applies fresh acrylic to the fitting surface, you bite into it to capture your exact gum contour, and it's processed and polished into a permanent new fit. Hard relines are long-lasting — typically good for 1–2 years — and are the standard choice for most patients.

Soft relines

A soft reline uses a pliable silicone material on the fitting surface. It's the right choice for patients with tender gums, sharply resorbed ridges, or chronic sore spots where a hard base is uncomfortable. The cushioning effect makes wearing the denture far more comfortable. Soft relines need renewal more often but dramatically improve quality of life for sensitive mouths.

Signs you need a reline

• The denture feels loose or rocks when you bite.
• Food is getting trapped underneath more than usual.
• You're using more adhesive than you used to.
• You've developed sore spots or pressure ulcers.
• It's been more than two years since the denture was made or last relined.

When a reline won't be enough

A reline only fixes the fit of the gum surface. If the denture teeth are badly worn (changing your bite height and facial proportions), the base is cracked, or the denture is simply old and brittle, a replacement is the better investment. Chris will always tell you honestly which is the right call — he won't reline a denture that truly needs replacing.
